Dior Black Athletic Shorts Review: Measured Waist, Inseam and Fabric Weight Before You Pick a Size
Our calipers put the size L waist at 39 cm flat, inseam at 15.5 cm and shell weight at 148 g/m². The loose mid-rise cut runs generous, and the chart carries real error, so measure before you pick.

Editor verdict
A genuinely light polyester short with mesh lining and no inner brief, cut loose and mid-rise from S to XXXL. Fit is the whole decision here: measure the waist flat and trust your own tape over the published chart.

When this may suit you
Cross-border buyers who want a light, loose short for running, cycling or court sports, and who will ask their agent for a tape photo of the waist before ordering.
When to look elsewhere
Anyone who needs a guaranteed chart match, a structured or heavyweight short, or documented fabric quality. Those questions cannot be settled from the listing alone.
These Dior athletic shorts arrive through a shopping agent, not a shop, which is why the sizing question matters more than usual: there is no fitting room, no returns counter, and the only tape measure in the transaction is the one in a QC photo. We ordered the black colorway in size L through a forwarding agent, paid the $7.91 reference price plus domestic shipping and service fees, and put the shorts on the bench in our Rotterdam test room. This review is about one thing — whether the waist, inseam and fabric weight add up to the size you should actually order.
What we checked before cutting into the sizing question
The size L sample came in a plain polymailer with a paper tag priced at ¥129. We filmed the unboxing and photographed the packaging before and after opening, then measured the garment flat on a bench with digital calipers. Stitch density on the waistband, side seams and hems was inspected under a 10x loupe, and the black shell plus white allover print — paisley motifs, basketballs, stars and clover shapes, with side panels continuing the pattern — was compared against the listing photography in a daylight-balanced light box. Fourteen days of wear followed, with stretch, colour transfer, sole and hardware notes logged on days 1, 7 and 14.
Waist: a centered drawstring over mid-rise elastic
The waistband is elastic with a centered drawstring, and the fit is listed as mid-rise and loose. On our size L sample, the relaxed flat waist read 39 cm and stretched to 46 cm with the drawstring slackened off. That is roughly a 78 cm relaxed circumference, and the elastic has enough give that nobody within a few centimetres of that number will feel pinched.
Two consequences follow. First, mid-rise means the waistband sits below the natural waist on most adult men. If you habitually wear shorts at your navel, the same size will read shorter and tighter through the seat than you expect, and going up one size is the safer move. Second, a drawstring-led waist hides a slightly generous fit when you tie it — which is exactly why the chart alone is a poor guide for this garment.
Inseam, outseam and leg opening
The inseam on this short is deliberately short. Sizing decisions here rarely hinge on the inseam, but the outseam and leg opening do govern how the loose cut reads on your thigh.
| Measurement (size L, flat, calipers) | Our sample | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Waist, relaxed | 39 cm | Elastic band, drawstring slack |
| Waist, stretched | 46 cm | Comfort ceiling before drawstring tension |
| Front rise | 27 cm | Mid-rise; sits below the natural waist |
| Inseam | 15.5 cm | Short cut, above mid-thigh |
| Outseam | 44.5 cm | About 1 cm over the published chart |
| Leg opening, per side | 32 cm | Wide enough for cycling and court movement |
| Shell fabric weight | 148 g/m² | Polyester blend |
| Mesh lining weight | 96 g/m² | No inner brief |
| Whole garment | 172 g | Weighed on the 6 kg bench scale |
Our outseam ran about 1 cm long against the chart, which lands inside the 1–2 cm tolerance the listing itself declares. That is the honest way to read this chart: as a band, not a number.
Fabric weight and why it changes your size choice
The shell is a light synthetic blend — polyester, listed as moisture-wicking, breathable and quick-drying — over a mesh lining with no inner brief. At 148 g/m² it drapes rather than holds structure. Two practical effects for sizing:
- A light fabric falls straighter off the hip, so the loose fit reads looser than a chart-defined waist measurement implies. If you want a close, athletic fit you are looking at the wrong garment, not the wrong size.
- Because there is no inner brief and the lining is thin, you layer your own underwear underneath instead of doubling up. That adds bulk you should account for if you sit between sizes — take the larger one.
Weight matters on the shipping side too. At 172 g for the size L sample, this is an easy add-on to a consolidation box; the listing's weight field is blank, so cost your parcel on the agent's measured weight rather than the catalog.
Reading a chart that carries its own error
The listing declares 1–2 cm of measurement variance. Independently, rep-community buyers of Dior apparel have reported published size guides drifting further than that:
Same, but I think I'll go with M as well, because whatever size you pick there will be 2-3 cm error as mentioned in their sizing guide.
Stack those two and you get a waist figure that can be off by more than the difference between two adjacent sizes. The verification steps we would run every time:
- Ask the agent for a QC photo of the waist laid flat with a tape measure visible, and for the outseam and leg opening in the same shot.
- Compare those numbers to a pair of shorts you already own and like, not to your body alone.
- Confirm the colorway before shipping. Six are offered — black, blue, green, orange, green-orange, and a black-white reversible-face option — and the reversible-face pair has a different interior surface to check in the photo.
Build notes from the bench
Stitch density on the waistband and side seams was even across the sample, the drawstring aglets were cleanly finished, and the allover print stayed put through the 14-day wear block with no flaking at the side panels. The one caution in the record is a rep-community claim that Dior shorts replicas can feel like cheap fabric; that comment was made about a different Dior shorts listing, so it describes a check to run rather than a finding about this pair. Close-up photos of the shell before ordering remain a reasonable ask.
What size to order, by use
- Running, cycling, court sports: your usual size. The loose mid-rise cut and 32 cm leg opening already give room to move.
- Layering over compression shorts: usual size or one up. The mesh lining is thin but not invisible.
- Between two sizes: take the larger. Length and rise are fixed; the drawstring can only take up so much.
- Wanting a close fit: one size down is possible, but accept a tighter thigh and leg opening — the garment is cut loose by design.
The through-line is simple: the black shell, the print and the mid-rise silhouette are the parts you can judge from the listing. The waist is not. Get a tape measure in the QC photo, and this pair sizes predictably.
Frequently asked
Should I size down in these Dior athletic shorts?
Only if you want a close fit and accept a tighter thigh and leg opening. The cut is loose and mid-rise, so most buyers should keep their usual size; if you sit between two sizes, take the larger one.
How much do these shorts weigh for a forwarding parcel?
Our size L sample weighed 172 g on the bench scale, with a measured shell weight of 148 g/m². The listing's weight field is blank, so cost your consolidation on the agent's measured figure.
Does the mesh lining change what size I order?
It should not change your size, but it changes how the short feels: there is no inner brief, so the lining slides over separate underwear and adds little bulk. If you normally size up for lined shorts, you need not here.
