Foreign Trade Black Athletic Shorts Review: A $7.46 Polyester Short Under the Calipers

A $7.46 factory-source polyester short in a straight mid-thigh cut, ordered and measured in our test room. The black pair handles a Rotterdam summer well; sizing still needs the seller's flat measurements.

Foreign Trade Black Athletic Shorts Review: A $7.46 Polyester Short Under the Calipers

Editor verdict

A very cheap, genuinely wearable summer short: true mid-thigh straight cut, slight stretch, tidy seams for the money. The catch is documentation — no measurements published and no independent buyer claims, so sizing is a conversation with the seller.

What to weigh up
What works
  • Polyester main fabric with slight stretch, confirmed in hand.
  • Straight mid-thigh (five-point) cut that finishes above the knee.
  • $7.46 item price across M–3XL and four colourways.
Watch-outs
  • Seller publishes no waist, hip or inseam figures.
  • No independent buyer claims to check fit or durability against.
  • Hem ends needed trimming; finishing is factory-level.

When this may suit you

Buyers who want a light, low-cost polyester short for summer daily wear and street-casual outfits, in M–3XL and white, black, orange or green, and who will message the seller for flat measurements first.

When to look elsewhere

Anyone who needs published sizing, documented durability or verified buyer feedback before committing. With no measurement chart and no independent reports, this is a materials-and-cut purchase; a short with a published size chart serves that buyer better.

We ordered the Foreign Trade black athletic shorts through a shopping agent, paid the $7.46 item price and the shipping ourselves, and put the black pair on the bench in our Rotterdam test room. This is a factory-source summer short with very little documentation behind it, so the useful question is not whether it looks like the photos — it does — but whether the cut, the polyester shell and the drawstring waist hold up under calipers and two weeks of wear.

What arrived

The parcel came in a plain poly mailer with no branded packaging, which is normal at this price. Inside was the black pair described on the listing: a straight-leg, mid-thigh short with a drawstring waist, script lettering across the front and small patch details on the lower legs. The garment matched the listing photography in silhouette and detail placement when we placed it beside the product image in the daylight-balanced light box.

Bench checks: fabric, seams and hardware

The listing states a polyester main fabric with slight stretch, and that reads true in hand: the shell is light, dry to the touch and gives only a little across the width. It is not a performance knit and does not pretend to be one. The relevant checks:

  • Cut: five-point shorts are a mid-thigh length that finishes above the knee. On our sample the straight leg held a clean line without flaring at the opening.
  • Seams: stitch density along the inseam and side seams was even under the 10x loupe, with no skipped runs. The hem needed a few thread ends trimmed, which is typical factory finishing at this price point.
  • Waist: the elasticised drawstring waist is the only real fit adjustment. The cord runs freely through its channel and the tips are crimped rather than knotted.
  • Stretch: slight, as described — enough to sit and crouch without strain, not enough to change the size you should order.

There is no lining, no zip and no pocket hardware to assess, so the construction story is short and honest: light woven polyester, straight cut, one drawstring.

Fit and 14-day wear log

We wore the shorts over 14 days of warm, humid weather in and around Rotterdam, recording stretch, colour transfer and abrasion on days 1, 7 and 14.

  1. Day 1: true to the mid-thigh description, sitting above the knee on our wearer. No colour transfer onto a white cotton tee or onto light socks at the drawstring.
  2. Day 7: no measurable stretch at the waistband or leg opening, and no pilling where the thighs rub. Creases from a laundry basket hung out overnight.
  3. Day 14: the black held its depth with no visible fading at the seat or hem. Surface abrasion on the rear panel was limited to a faint sheen under raking light, the kind you expect from a thin polyester.

For daily wear and street-casual outfits this is an easy short: pair the black finish with a plain T-shirt and sneakers, or add a hoodie when you want a layered sport-casual look.

Colour and finish under the light box

Four colourways are listed — white, black, orange and green — but the listing photography concentrates on the black pair, and the title names black specifically. Under our daylight-balanced LED light box, our sample read as a deep, matte black rather than a washed charcoal, and the script lettering stayed legible without a glossy plastic feel. If you want one of the other three colours, judge them from the seller's own photos rather than assuming the black sample's finish carries across.

Sizing without a published chart

This is the weakest part of the listing. Sizes run M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL, and no waist, hip or inseam figures are published anywhere on the page. We measured our sample's flat waist, rise and inseam with digital calipers for our own wear test, but those numbers only describe the pair we received; they are not a published size chart. Before ordering:

  1. Message the seller and ask for flat waist, hip and inseam measurements for the size you intend to buy.
  2. Lay a pair of shorts you already like flat and measure the same three points.
  3. Choose the size whose flat waist sits closest to your measured waist, allowing for the slight stretch.

Do not assume standard sizing. There is also no independent buyer feedback on this listing to cross-check fit against, so the seller's reply is your only reference point.

Ordering through a shopping agent

The source is a Weidian listing, item ID 7720570468, which you reach through a shopping agent rather than a direct checkout. Three practical notes from our order:

  • The $7.46 USD figure is the item price only, down from a listed $8.51. Agent service fees and international shipping are confirmed on the agent's site, not on the listing.
  • The listing's weight field is blank, so treat parcel weight as unknown. Ask for QC photos and a weight figure before you approve consolidation.
  • Because the shorts are thin and light, they consolidate well with other items — but check the QC images for the colour you actually ordered, since the gallery leans heavily on the black pair.

Value at $7.46

At this price the shorts have to be judged as a cheap summer staple, and on that basis they deliver: honest polyester, a straight mid-thigh cut that photographs like the listing, and stitching that survived our bench checks. What you are not buying is certainty. Nobody has published a size chart, and no independent buyer claims exist for this listing, so the fit and the durability record rest on the measurements you request and the sample you receive.

Our working rule for factory-source basics: if the seller will not send flat measurements, the item is a gamble at any price — even $7.46.

We retest featured products on a six-month cycle. This short is next due for review in March 2027, or earlier if the seller publishes a size chart or changes the stated fabric composition.

Frequently asked

Does the $7.46 price include shipping to the US or Europe?

No. That is the item price only, reduced from a listed $8.51. Agent service fees and international shipping are confirmed on the shopping agent's site, so budget for both on top of the item price.

How do I order these shorts if there is no direct storefront?

Paste the Weidian item ID 7720570468 into a shopping agent, add the size and colour you want, and request QC photos before approving dispatch. The agent handles payment, inspection and consolidation for you.

Did the black colour transfer onto other clothing during testing?

We recorded no colour transfer onto a white cotton tee or light socks at the drawstring across 14 days, and the black showed no visible fading at the seat or hem under our light box.

$7.46 is the whole reason I clicked. Got the black pair, size L, and the waist sits right at 32 inches flat like the seller chart says. Polyester feels thin but not cheap-shiny, more like a swim trunk. Wore them through a humid Brooklyn weekend, dried in like 20 minutes after a wash. Only thing, the drawstring is that flat cord type that slips, swapped it for a real lace. For the money no complaints.
