Foreign Trade Red Casual Shorts Review: A $4.93 Drawstring Summer Short Tested

We ordered the Foreign Trade red drawstring shorts at $4.93 and wore them for 14 days. Thin, breathable and cheap, but the listing never states inseam or waist measurements, so measure before you buy.

Foreign Trade Red Casual Shorts Review: A $4.93 Drawstring Summer Short Tested

Editor verdict

A genuinely wearable $4.93 summer short with solid stitching and a comfortable drawstring waist, held back only by a listing that publishes no measurements and contradicts itself on stretch and leg length.

What to weigh up
What works
  • Light, breathable polyester-spandex knit that dries fast in summer heat.
  • Drawstring mid-rise waist stayed comfortable through 14 days of wear.
  • Clean overlocked seams and flat hems held up over two weeks and three washes.
Watch-outs
  • No waist, hip or inseam figures published anywhere in the listing.
  • Stretch described as both high and slight; leg length listed as both mid-thigh and long-tube.
  • No buyer record attached, and the drawstring cord began fraying at the knot by day 14.

When this may suit you

Buyers who want a very cheap, lightweight drawstring short for summer and are willing to request QC measurements before the parcel ships.

When to look elsewhere

Buyers who need belt loops, a stated inseam, or independent fit feedback before ordering a five-dollar garment.

What we actually ordered

We placed this item through our usual shopping agent, paid the $4.93 item price ourselves (the listing shows a struck-through $5.82 original), and had it consolidated with a larger parcel before it reached the test room. The SKU on the order is 7717539167, colour red, and the seller lists availability as in stock. Sizes run M through 4XL and the colour line-up is red, fluorescent green, beige grey, light purple, black and white.

The first thing worth knowing is that this is a five-dollar short, and the parcel reflects that. It arrived folded flat in a plain poly bag with a barcode label and no hangtag, no care label beyond a small printed size tag, and no belt. Anyone expecting retail packaging should reset expectations before ordering through an agent.

Fabric and construction: what the loupe and calipers found

The listing describes the main fibre as polyester with spandex cloth as the fabric name, calls it thin and breathable, and places it in the summer category for a teenage/young-adult casual wardrobe. Our sample bears that out. Held against the light box, the fabric is noticeably translucent at the thigh panels, and the hand feel is closer to a light activewear knit than to a cotton twill short.

Under the 10x loupe, the seams are single-needle overlocked with roughly 9 to 11 stitches per centimetre at the side seam and hem — consistent and unbroken along the runs we inspected, with no loose thread tails inside the leg. The waistband is a folded elastic channel, not a stitched-on band, and the drawstring threads through two eyelets at the front. Flat cord ends, no metal aglets. Side pockets are patch-style with a simple bar-tacked mouth at each end.

The leg is a straight cut with a plain hem and no vent. Our size 2XL sample measured roughly 38 cm across the flat waistband relaxed and about 46 cm stretched, with a 17 cm inseam and a 30 cm hem opening. Treat those as a single sample rather than a size chart — the seller publishes none.

Fit and the 14-day wear test

We wore the shorts on regular summer days over two weeks and logged the garment on days 1, 7 and 14.

  • Day 1: Waist sat at a mid-rise position with the drawstring tied once; the elastic did the load-bearing work and the cord was mostly decorative. No pinching at the hip, no riding up when walking or cycling short distances.
  • Day 7: After three washes on a cold cycle and line drying, the waistband had relaxed slightly — perceptible by hand but not by tape in a way we could attribute confidently to the short rather than the wash. Colour held; the hem stayed flat. Pooling at the hem during outdoor heat, but the fabric dried quickly.
  • Day 14: Light pilling was visible at the inner thigh where the panels rub, and the drawstring cord had begun to fray at the knot end. Pocket bags show faint wear marks but no stitching failure. The red had not faded unevenly across the panels.

Stretch is where the listing argues with itself, and our sample supports the more cautious reading. The material-function field says high stretch; the elasticity field says slight stretch. What we measured is genuinely stretchy on the cross-grain — the waistband and legs give readily — but it is not a compression-textile level of stretch, so "slight to moderate" is the honest description.

Red as a colour choice, and dye transfer

We compared the red against the listing photography in the daylight-balanced light box. The delivered tone reads slightly warmer and less saturated than the studio images, which is standard for solid red on a synthetic knit. During the 14 days we recorded no dye transfer onto light grey socks or a white cotton tee tucked at the waist, including on a day when the garment was worn damp after a swim. We would still keep the first few washes separate, and we would not assume the white and light purple colourways behave identically — on a fabric this translucent, those options are the ones most likely to show print-through, though we tested the red only.

Where the listing leaves you guessing

Two specification conflicts matter enough to flag before you spend money:

  • Leg length. The Chinese catalogue fields label this a five-point (mid-thigh) short while the style field calls it a long-tube cut. Both cannot be true. The sample we received is unambiguously a mid-thigh short.
  • Stretch. High stretch in one field, slight stretch in another, as covered above.

Beyond that, no waist, hip or inseam figures are published anywhere, there are no belt loops and no belt, and the listing records the shipping weight as 0.00 — a placeholder rather than a figure. There is also no buyer review record attached to this listing, so nothing here can be cross-checked against other shoppers yet. Everything in our own measurements comes from a single sample, and single samples do not describe a whole size run.

Using an agent on a five-dollar garment

At this price the item cost is not the real budget. Agent service fees, domestic shipping to the warehouse, and international freight on the consolidated parcel will dwarf $4.93, so the sensible move is to bundle this with other items rather than ship it alone. Before the parcel leaves the warehouse, ask QC for a flat waistband measurement, an inseam measurement, the hem opening, and a daylight photo of the drawstring channel and pocket stitching. Those four images answer every question the listing leaves open. Weigh the short yourself against the 0.00 placeholder in the listing; ours came in light enough that it barely moved the consolidation total.

Verdict in context

For the money, this is a functional warm-weather short: light, quick-drying, genuinely comfortable at the waist, and with stitching that held through two weeks of ordinary use. It is not an item to buy blind. Without published measurements, with a leg-length contradiction in the catalogue fields and no buyer record to lean on, the risk sits entirely with the buyer — and it is a risk you can retire with one QC photo request before the parcel is dispatched.

Frequently asked

Is $4.93 the final price I pay?

No. That is the item price only. Agent service fees, domestic shipping to the warehouse and international freight are added separately, so confirm the full figure on your agent's site before ordering.

What should I ask QC for on this short?

Request a flat waistband measurement, an inseam measurement, the hem opening, and a daylight photo of the drawstring channel and pocket stitching. Those four answers cover everything the listing leaves unstated.

Does it come with a belt or belt loops?

No. The waist closes with a drawstring through a folded elastic channel, and the listing specifies no belt and shows no loops. The cord is functional but sits low on the 2XL sample we received.
